Quickline awarded contract to bring improved broadband speeds to thousands of premises

Project Gigabit is the government’s £5 billion programme to enable hard-to-reach communities to access gigabit-capable broadband, which aims to achieve 85% gigabit-capable broadband coverage by 2025 and nationwide coverage by 2030. Gigabit-capable broadband provides a download speed of at least 1 gigabit per second (or 1000 megabits per second). It is at least twenty times faster than the current average broadband speed in the UK will allow you to download a high definition film in less than 1 minute.

As part of Project Gigabit, Building Digital UK (BDUK) carried out a procurement across West Yorkshire, parts of North Yorkshire and the East Riding, and Quickline has now been awarded a £60m contract to provide around 28,000 hard-to-reach premises with improved broadband speeds. Of this 28,000, The East Riding of Yorkshire has up to 3,000 premises within the contract and the wards that are included within the scope are: Howden, Howdenshire, Pocklington Provincial and Wolds Weighton. Detailed information about which premises are included in the scope will be known in the coming months and will be shared as soon as it is publicly available.

East Riding of Yorkshire Council will continue to work collaboratively with BDUK, North Yorkshire County Council, West Yorkshire Combined Authority and the supplier, to ensure that the project meets its deliverables in a timely manner.

Cllr Charlie Dewhirst, East Riding of Yorkshire Council's Deputy Leader said: "Access to high-speed broadband services is vital for economic growth and the development of a strong local economy, particularly in rural areas. Delivery of many commercial and public services is increasingly dependent on good quality internet access, leading to real disadvantages to those residents and businesses without high-speed broadband. It is also critical to the delivery of the Council's Digital Strategy. There has been a lot of progress made over the last few years through both public and commercial investment, and we welcome this further investment into the East Riding of Yorkshire."

Other East Riding wards will be included in Lot 20 and Lot 23, with supplier announcements expected by April 2024.
