Go superfast during the Easter holidays like Holderness resident Angela

Is your slow broadband speed driving you as mad as a March hare? Make like Great Hatfield resident Angela Worsley and hop on to a faster broadband connection during the Easter holidays.

On average, residents and businesses in the UK connect to the internet at 10Mbps, compromising on who can connect devices and struggling to work or play online. Slow internet speeds are estimated to cost UK businesses a collective £11 billion a year.

Thanks to the national roll out of superfast broadband, administered in the East Riding by East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s Broadband East Riding programme, thousands of local people are now enjoying broadband speeds of above 24Mbps and upload speeds around five times faster than before the upgrade.

From Goole to Flamborough and Pocklington to Withernsea, many East Yorkshire residents and businesses can enjoy improved broadband speeds right now, by simply upgrading with their preferred internet service provider (ISP).

Find out how superfast broadband could benefit you and your family by talking to the Broadband East Riding team online or in your community. Come along to the drop-in events, listed below, or visit broadband.eastriding.gov.uk

Angela is delighted with her new superfast broadband and has seen a massive increase in speeds. Her Great Hatfield home is busy with her husband, an accountant, often needing to work from home and their two children needing broadband to study and keep in touch with their friends.

She said: “My 20-year-old daughter is currently studying at university and a decent broadband speed is essential to complete her degree. My 15-year-old son is doing his GCSEs and often needs the internet to complete his homework. There’s also the social aspect too, living in a village the internet is how my children stay in touch with their friends. My son enjoys playing on his games console, but he couldn’t go online like his friends before as our old broadband was so slow.”

Whether for work or play, faster and more reliable internet is a modern day necessity. With school holidays upon us, there will be even more devices connected to the home WIFI. For those working from home, it could mean a drastic drop in connection speed. On superfast fibre broadband, everyone can stay connected simultaneously.

Previously working from home would be so frustrating for Angela.

“As a teacher, I often have to plan and prepare work at home, my broadband was so slow I used to open an attachment from an email and go and make a cup of tea whilst it downloaded,” she said.

Angela’s property has particularly benefitted from the programme.

She said: “My broadband at home previously was absolutely rubbish, only receiving 1Mbps it felt as though my broadband was non-existent. After upgrading our package, we’re now on 24Mbps and it is fantastic. My children can now be online gaming and completing university work, all while I’m downloading on-demand TV or working from home. I really can’t believe how fast it is!”

Angela found upgrading quick and easy, shopping around for a great broadband package.

“It was very quick and easy to upgrade, and I have recommended it to all my neighbours in Great Hatfield, there’s no way I would go back to standard broadband,” she said.

Councillor Jonathan Owen, deputy leader of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said: “The example of how faster broadband speeds are helping improve the lives of residents like Angela is really great news and is a positive endorsement of the Broadband East Riding programme.

“Good internet connections are vital for family life and modern business operations. It is therefore important that people check if superfast broadband is available in their area and to upgrade with their preferred ISP, as it is not an automatic switch.”

Tom Keeney, BT’s regional director for Yorkshire and the Humber, added: “We’re increasingly doing more online – whether it’s children doing their homework, applying for jobs, or simply staying connected with the outside world. Inevitably, this means we need greater capacity to do all these things online, which is why we all need fibre.

“In an increasingly globalised world, East Riding small businesses are providing an engine that drives the local economy. It has been shown that small enterprises that are active online are more successful, grow more quickly and reach wider markets than their peers. Technology is transforming business practices, and it’s all fuelled by next generation high speed broadband.”

Working with BT, the Broadband East Riding programme is replacing the copper network to the cabinet with fibre optic cables. Thanks to this, many premises can upgrade their broadband package to receive faster speeds.

Once an area is live, residents and businesses will need to contact their preferred ISP provider to upgrade to a faster broadband package – it will not be done automatically.

Phase two of the Broadband East Riding programme starts this year, with the aim of connecting a further 4,500 properties across the area to superfast broadband by December 2017.
