Residents and businesses are being urged to log on to a new website to have their say on better broadband in the East Riding.
If you are interested in having superfast broadband at your home or business, please visit http://broadband.eastriding.gov.uk and complete one of our surveys that is available from today, 1 February, until the autumn.
There is a new impetus behind moves to increase the availability of reliable broadband services as the Government has announced that it wants the UK to have the best broadband network in Europe by 2015. This means that the East Riding could see superfast broadband rolled out to many places where the existing service is slow and unreliable.
But evidence is needed to show how current broadband is working locally for both businesses and individuals and the Council is being asked to bid for Government funding to secure a better service.
Councillor Jonathan Owen, the council's deputy leader and portfolio holder for performance, improvement and partnerships, said: "The provision of reliable broadband services across the whole of the East Riding is vital to ensure the area is not left behind as internet services continues to develop.
"The East Riding Local Broadband Plan will identify localities that need investment for both basic reliable broadband (where currently there is none) and provision of superfast broadband as demand for this service increases.
"I urge residents and businesses in the East Riding to visit the web site and register their interest as completing the survey will help develop the project and secure funding. Success depends on the ability to demonstrate that families, businesses and communities in all parts of the East Riding have a genuine need for faster and more reliable broadband."
IT consultant Richard Hale has saved thousands on fuel bills and slashed his annual commute by more than 20,000 miles – thanks to the Broadband East Riding programme.
Self-employed Richard said existing broadband speeds to his home in Bridlington were so slow he was forced to make a 140 mile commute to offices in York and Leeds to connect with clients.
But the arrival of superfast broadband as part of the Broadband East Riding roll-out has enabled him to stay put, ditch his long commute and work from the family home, serving customers around the globe.
